Safe Digging Education

Safe digging is everyone’s responsibility. It’s a free service to notify Missouri One Call of your planned excavation to help prevent damages that may result in fines, utility service interruption and injury or even death. The 5 short video segments below detail how to dig safely.

Step #1: The Process

Before that shovel hits the dirt, Know what's underground.

Safe digging is no accident. Electric, gas, water, sewer, telephone and cable lines are buried everywhere. Some are only an inch or two below the ground's surface.

Projects where digging is required can become a serious safety hazard for you, your family and neighbors.

Be Safe! No matter how small the job! A job as small as planting a tree or installing a mailbox or fence can damage underground facilities.

Avoid serious injury or death and expensive damage to property and utility lines. Always call or click before you dig. It's easy. It's free. And, it's the law. Call Missouri One Call at 1-800-DIG-RITE or 811. Or, go online to mo1call.com. By notifying Missouri One Call, you will be able to place a locate request to notifying the utilities of when and where you plan to dig.

A locate request provides the information to the utility companies that they need to find your dig site and mark their underground facilities. Allowing you to then dig safely.

It's important to be prepared before you contact Missouri One Call either by phone or by internet. First, make sure you contact us 3 working days before you plan to dig. You need to have information ready to complete your request. "Thank you for calling Missouri One Call. This is Lisa. How may I help you?" Both systems will walk you through a series of required questions. Know your start date. This is the day you plan to start digging. Provide your name and phone number. Your mailing and email addresses. An on-site contact name and phone number.

The type of work you will be doing. The type of equipment you will be using. Who the work is being done for. If there will be trenchless excavation or explosives involved. The Depth you plan to dig. The county, city and nearest cross street to the dig site. And, the location of the work.

This information is used to determine which utilities are present at your dig site. Whether you choose to call or provide this information on line, the process should only take a few minutes. An important few minutes that could save your life. You will then need to write down your request number and the utility companies that will be contacted.

Now, you must wait the required 3 working days before you begin to dig. This will allow the time needed for Missouri One Call and the utility companies to do their parts in making sure you are safe to dig. Here's what happens while you are waiting.

After you have submitted the necessary information, Missouri One Call will immediately transmit this information to the utilities who in turn will either mark their facilities or inform you they have no facilities at your dig site. Missouri law defines this time period as two working days but does not count the day you call in. To make it easy to remember, that's why we always say Call or Click 3 working days before you plan to dig.

Please keep in mind, a working day excludes weekends and holidays.

To speed the process and increase accuracy you should mark your proposed dig site with white paint or white flags.

During this 3 day time period, the utilities will mark the approximate location of their underground lines, request additional information or advise you that they do not have facilities at the excavation site.

So, after waiting the appropriate time, to be safe...you must always confirm utility response before proceeding.

One way to confirm each utilities response at the dig site is by comparing the marks at the dig site and the "No Facilities" notifications received to the list of utilities named on your ticket.

Another way is to use Ticket Search on the home page of Missouri One Calls website. Enter your 9 digit ticket number and click Search. Each utilities status is listed at the bottom.

If any utility listed on the locate request has failed to respond, you are required to contact Missouri One Call to place a "No Response" request. If all utilities have responded, you are now free to begin digging. Respect the marks. They are your guide to a safe and successful dig. Remember, it is always important that you dig carefully.
